Class: Intermediate Pottery Wheel at Denver Pottery Studio
This Class Meets on Fridays in April from 3pm-5pm on the following days:
- Friday, April 4 - 3pm-5pm
- Friday, April 11 - 3pm-5pm
- Friday April 18 - 3pm-5pm
- Friday April 26 - 3pm-5pm
In Intermediate Pottery Wheel, you'll learn to throw larger forms with consistent walls and more varied form. We'll build on foundational skills of wedging, centering, and raising walls to create vases and serving bowls. This class is designed for those with prior experience on the pottery wheel or completion of Intro to Pottery Wheel. Join a relaxed and welcoming studio environment and take the next step of your pottery journey!
Class Overview:
In this pottery class, students will cover the step-by-step process of throwing larger, taller forms, adding variation to cylinders and serving bowls, making handles, and shaping vases and vessels. We'll explore underglaze techniques like relief, sgraffito, and various glaze combinations.
Pre-requisite:
Ability to center 3 lbs. of clay (most of the time...or...some of the time : ), throw small bowls, or completion of Intro to Pottery Wheel. If you have some experience on the pottery wheel--this class is for you!
Course Structure:
Four weekly class sessions, each lasting two hours (8 hours total of guided instruction).
Class Schedule:
This class meets from 3pm-5pm on Fridays, for 4 consecutive weeks.
Studio Access:
Enrollment includes unlimited access to Denver Pottery Studio for the duration of the course except when other classes are in session. Check out our Open Studio page for more information.
What You'll Learn:
- Throw larger cylinders at least 6" tall
- Form vases or vessels with varied shapes
- Attach handles to smaller forms
- Apply intricate surface decoration and glazing techniques
Pottery Class Outline
Week One
Review of centering and basic shaping, introduction to larger forms, and understanding wall thickness, centering larger amounts of clay.
Week Two
Throwing techniques for large bowls and cylinders, exploring form and function, and techniques for raising more clay.
Week Three
Advanced trimming techniques, adding handles, and surface decoration methods like carving and stamping.
Week Four
Glazing techniques for more complex pieces, sgraffito, underglaze techniques, final demonstrations, and individual project time.
Materials Included

25 pounds of clay for use during the course.
- Use of aprons, tools, and glazes is included with registration.
- Students receive key-code access to the studio on the first day of class.
